The south coast of Paraiba is famous for the incredible beauty of its pristine beaches, each with its own beauty. Most of the trail is within an environmental protection area, the APA Tambaba, from the Tabatinga beach to the Barra do Graú (on the other side of the Tambaba beach). Colored sandy cliffs, the must-see viewpoints (access only via JEEP 4x4), mangroves and lush vegetation, form a unique combination.
Easternmost point of the Americas, where the sun rises first (at 4:50 AM!), this narrow beach is dominated by the Cabo Branco lighthouse located above the cliff. This cliff is now threatened by the action of the sea and man...
The beach of Jacarapé -> Top of page
Frequented by locals, this beach has a small mangrove embroidered bars. People eat here with feet in the water when the tide goes up...
The Beach of Barra de Gramame, side João Pessoa -> Top of page
This side where the river Gramame comes has a beautiful view over the lagoon. Riding through the beach with a JEEP 4x4, we arrive at a deserted place where black lava rocks are silhouetted against a white limestone cliff. Turning in the opposite direction, there is a view of the other side located in Conde.
The Beach Bar Gramame, side Conde -> Top of page
Bars line the lagoon. In the background one can see the houses of Tabajaras Indians. You can see the other side of the slope-side access in João Pessoa. This place inspires peace and tranquility. With the lagoon (where you can do raft and kayak), the Barra de Gramame is suitable for families with children. When the sea permits, one can reach the Beach of Love, going with JEEP 4x4 along the beach of Gurugi...
The beach of Love -> Top of page
With the pierced stone, this beach allows you to take some nice pictures. This beach is a necessary step for couples because of this legend: once lived in there two tribes of Indians: Tabajaras one side of the stone, and Potiguares the other side. The neighborhood relatios between the two tribes were difficult, until a young Tabajara fell in love with a young Potiguar... There has been a rapprochement between the two tribes under the pierced stone, hence the name beach of Love. The pierced stone has become the symbol of the transition to married life, and the promise that if a couple comes and goes through the hole, the union will never break.
The beach of Caripabus -> Top of page
Having a difficult access, this beach has gray coral on the surface of the water...
The beach of Tabatinga -> Top of page
Forgotten by all guides, this long beach is worth seeing (Tabatinga means in Guarani: white clay... because of the white cliffs of clay). On the side of the sea there is a beautiful view of the red cliffs of the "finger of God". The shallow and warm water lagoon is ideal for bathing, also with small children.
The beach of Coqueirinho -> Top of page
The most famous beach of the coast, Coqueirinho has two beaches, the best being "Prainha" shaped cove, protected from waves by a small reef. Beating on the reef, the sea has dug caves. Other attractions are the canyons carved by the rain, and colorful (accessible only with JEEP 4x4). Access is difficult in high season because of traffic jams and lack of parking spaces.
The beach of Tambaba (with naturist part) -> Top of page
Mythical beach with a naturist part, Tambaba in Guarani means: inside the shell. Indeed, the beach is protected by rocks that form natural pools when the tide is low. The star of the beach is a coconut tree that grows above a rock in the shape of heart... this beach has the whitest and finest sand of the coast: a delight! You access the nudist part by a staircase located at the end of the beach. To throw a glance, it is compulsory to join the show!
The Barra of Grau -> Top of page
With complicated access, this beach is the wildest of the southern coast, getting other side of the naturist part of Tambaba... The Grau river meets the sea forming a mangrove. Paradise of birds, fish and crustaceans, Barra of Grau is a true ecological sanctuary!
The Bela Beach -> Top of page
Already more remote, this beach has a pool embroidered with small restaurants serving dishes... in the pond, the waiters coming by raft!
Barra do Abiai -> Top of page
Jeep 4x4 access only... an #EcoturismoECultura exclusivity!
The Viewpoints -> Top of page
Truly unmissable! The best known are the "Finger of God" and the "Castle of the Princess", but there are many other lookouts worthing a look... there are only accessible with a JEEP 4x4!
The "Finger of God" -> Top of page
The most famous viewpoint (pay attention to the visiting hours, for security reasons). It has an amazing view on the beach of Tabatinga, and another stunning view on the smaller beach of Coqueirinho. Given the clean air, the purest of the Americas, you can see the towers of Joao Pessoa, tens of kilometers there! The sea is frequented by sea turtles...
The "Canyons" -> Top of page
There are several canyons, the most beautiful is reachable only by JEEP 4x4 when the tide is low; the largest being in Coqueirinho.
These colorful canyons (actually they are gullies), with amazing shapes, are caused by erosion from rains and global warming: the roots of weakened plants can no longer hold back the ground that collapses with rains...
All this red material reaches the sea, and accumulate itself behind the reef between Cabedelo and João Pessoa, forming the island "Areia Vermelha" (Red Sand).
The Trails on the beaches -> Top of page
There are a number JEEP 4x4 trails reaching canyons, cliffs and lookouts not to be missed, with stretches on the beaches.
The cliffs -> Top of page
The sandy cliffs are colored by various minerals, forming sculptures with the rain erosion.
